Poland Parliament passes bills to ease abortion restrictions

The Polish Sejm has passed two legislative measures aimed at easing the country’s strict abortion laws. The first bill, proposed by the governing coalition including Civic Coalition and the Left, seeks to partially decriminalize abortion and the assistance provided to women undergoing the procedure. This vote passed with 217 in favor, 213 against, and 3 abstentions.

The second bill, introduced by the more conservative members of the coalition, Poland 2050 and the Polish People's Party (PSL), aims to restore the legality of abortion in cases of severe and irreversible fetal abnormalities. This would overturn a 2020 Constitutional Tribunal ruling that had banned the practice. This measure received 233 votes in favor and 203 against.

While the legislation has cleared the lower house, its implementation remains uncertain. Conservative President Karol Nawrocki is widely expected to veto both bills. If vetoed, the legislation would return to Parliament, where a two-thirds majority would be required to override the decision.
