UNMAS destroys explosive remnants of war in Bule

The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), part of MONUSCO, destroyed several explosive remnants of war on August 18 in Bule, located in the Djugu Territory of Ituri Province.

The neutralized devices were discovered the previous week in Bule’s commercial center by residents who are returning to the area after spending nine months at a displacement site in Plaine Savo. Following reports of the dangerous objects, MONUSCO peacekeepers secured the site until demining specialists from Bunia arrived to carry out the destruction.

The intervention addresses a significant threat to a community of over 50,000 people, which has been impacted by intense clashes between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) and various armed groups. Local authorities and residents are calling for expanded demining operations, as other explosive remnants may still be present in the town.
