Unna imposes budget freeze amid rising debt and deficits

The city of Unna has implemented a budget freeze, effective September 9, 2026. The local political group ‘Wir für Unna’ (WfU) stated that the city’s financial margins are narrowing due to rising debt, a growing deficit, and the depletion of municipal equity.

WfU noted that they have repeatedly warned of these structural deficits and the risks associated with increasing district levies. The group criticized previous political decisions, such as the complete abolition of childcare fees by the CDU and SPD, as contributors to the long-term burden on the budget. WfU has offered to collaborate with all factions in the council to develop a clear strategy for prioritizing spending and investments.
