Uno Bianca investigation: New book examines alleged misdirection in 1988 murders
Journalist Massimiliano Mazzanti has released a new book, ‘Uno Bianca – 1988, Lastrage di Castel Maggiore e il depistaggio Macauda’, which provides a detailed reconstruction of the 1988 murders of Carabinieri Cataldo Stasi and Umberto Erriu.
The 648-page work focuses on the investigation into the Uno Bianca gang and specifically examines the alleged misdirection by former Carabinieri brigadier Domenico Macauda. Macauda was arrested in 1988 on charges of tampering with evidence, specifically regarding the placement of a shell casing in an abandoned vehicle to divert investigators toward unrelated individuals.
During the book's presentation, Michele Stasi, the brother of the deceased officer Cataldo Stasi, advocated for continued clarity regarding the case. He raised questions concerning the sudden change of duty shifts on the night of the ambush that placed his brother and Erriu at the scene. Mazzanti’s investigation utilizes trial and investigative records, including previously unpublished documents, to explore why Macauda acted and whether other parties assisted in protecting the gang from prosecution.
