Roger Mariaca arrested in Bolivia amid U.S. visa revocations FAST-MOVING

Bolivian Attorney General Roger Mariaca has been arrested following a series of operations targeting a suspected criminal organization within the Public Ministry. The Bolivian government alleges that Mariaca led a structure involved in protecting and incentivizing narcoterrorism and illicit enrichment.

The arrests come amid significant diplomatic tension, as the United States Department of State recently revoked the visas of 26 authorities and businesspeople from Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador. This action is part of the 'Escudo de las Américas' initiative, aimed at combating corruption and drug trafficking. Washington has accused Mariaca of accepting bribes to facilitate narcotics trafficking and assist criminals in evading justice.

Mariaca’s arrest is closely linked to ongoing investigations into Fernando Cerimedo, an Argentine digital operator and advisor to leaders including Javier Milei of Argentina and Rodrigo Paz of Bolivia. Cerimedo is accused of attempted feminicide, drug trafficking, and operating 'click farms' to manipulate social media. Mariaca has characterized the U.S. visa restrictions as a violation of Bolivian national sovereignty.
