Unreal Engine 5 Boosts Game Development While Engine Choice Remains Debated

Industry discussion continues over whether developers should build their own game engines or adopt existing ones. Critics cite recent Unity controversies as a reason to seek alternatives, highlighting benefits such as full control over technology, reduced distribution size and the ability to open‑source the engine.

Sandfall Interactive used Unreal Engine 5 to create the 2025 title Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. CEO Guillaume Brochet praised UE5’s tools—including Nanite, Lumen and the visual‑scripting Blueprint system—for enabling a small team to produce high‑quality content. The studio also noted the challenges of porting the game to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, despite UE5’s improvements.

Both perspectives underscore the trade‑offs developers weigh between custom engines and powerful third‑party solutions.
