UNSA Monumental Stadium faces safety risks and regulatory scrutiny

The Comptroller General of the Republic has issued an urgent demand to the Universidad Nacional de San Agustín (UNSA) to present an action plan regarding significant safety risks identified at the Monumental Stadium in Arequipa. The university has a five-day deadline, ending Wednesday, September 16, to address these findings.

An inspection conducted between August 19 and September 4 revealed several critical deficiencies. These include fire safety hazards, such as combustible materials stored without functional or up-to-date extinguishers, and exposed electrical wiring near humid areas. The report also noted the deterioration of infrastructure, including roofs, showers, seating, and green areas, as well as improper storage of food and non-food items that could attract rodents.

A notable issue involves the stadium's LED lighting system. Although the facility belongs to the university, the control of the software and configuration is held exclusively by the FBC Melgar football club. This lack of direct access for university personnel violates University Law and complicates the management of university assets.

If the stadium fails to rectify these issues and maintain its ITSE safety certificate, it may be prohibited from hosting public events. This would directly impact FBC Melgar, which uses the venue for its home matches.
