UNT speeds up rector election after Sergio Pagani barred
Argentina's National University of Tucumán (UNT) will hold a new rector election after the Federal Court of Appeals confirmed that former rector Sergio Pagani cannot run for a consecutive third term. The ruling removed the main obstacle that had stalled the university's governance for months.
The university's officialist bloc is accelerating the electoral calendar, aiming to complete the selection of a new rector and vice‑rector before the end of August. Mercedes Leal, the current vice‑rector, is eligible to run. Potential candidates being discussed include Jorge Rospide, dean of the Faculty of Economic Sciences, and Susana del Valle Monserrat, dean of the Faculty of Agronomy, Zootecnia and Veterinary Sciences, among others. The Electoral Board has submitted a shortened timetable to the Superior Council, and the University Assembly will convene to choose the new authorities.
