Unterberg ski area closes amid climate challenges in Lower Austria

The Unterberg ski area in the Wiener Neustadt district has announced it will cease operations following two consecutive winter seasons without a single day of operation. The facility, which marketed itself as a ‘natural snow paradise,’ intentionally avoided artificial snowmaking, leaving it vulnerable to insufficient snowfall. The area previously offered 16 kilometers of slopes and four lifts.

Management is currently working with landowners to develop a new concept for the site, potentially repurposing it for ski touring and snowshoe hiking. This closure highlights the increasing economic pressure on smaller, lower-altitude ski resorts that lack the financial resources for extensive artificial snow production.

In contrast, the state-owned ecoplus Alpin GmbH reported record visitor numbers for its five mountain railways in Lower Austria during the summer season. The company recorded 230,000 visitors, driven by a 31 percent increase during the summer holidays as guests sought relief from heatwaves in the mountains. The success of these facilities is attributed to year-round operational models.
