UOM land transfer scandal involves La Cámpora ties

A controversy has emerged regarding the transfer of an 80,000-square-meter plot of land from the Argentine Armed Forces to the Metalworkers' Union (UOM) during the administration of Alberto Fernández and Cristina Kirchner. The land, located in Tres de Febrero, was granted to the union via a free and precarious permit by the State Property Administration Agency (AABE).

The transfer process was expedited through the AABE, which at the time was led by Vice President Juan Debandi, a member of the political group La Cámpora. The UOM, led by Abel Furlán, planned to use the site to build the “Nuevo Polo Multifuncional Unión Obrera Metalúrgica,” a complex featuring convention centers, training classrooms, and sports facilities intended to be funded by union members.

Investigations have highlighted potential conflicts of interest, noting that the architectural firm hired for the project has ties to La Cámpora. Additionally, legal scrutiny is focused on the union's financial dealings and the rapid nature of the land's reassignment. Construction efforts have faced setbacks, including requests from the local mayor to halt works due to zoning incompatibilities and a lack of essential public services.
