UPA Castilla y León calls for protest over agricultural diesel subsidies
The agricultural union UPA Castilla y León has called for a general mobilization and a protest in Valladolid on August 27, scheduled to take place in front of the Presidency of the Junta de Castilla y León. The protest aims to denounce what the organization describes as the inaction of the regional government regarding rising production costs.
UPA has formally requested that the Ministry of Economy extend the current agricultural diesel subsidy of 20 cents per liter beyond its scheduled expiration on September 30. The union is calling for the extension to last until the end of the year, citing recent data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) which showed an upward correction in July's inflation due to intense pressure from fuel prices.
While the union previously viewed the central government's support plan for fuel and fertilizers positively, they now deem the measures insufficient to combat the recent escalation in costs and the low prices farmers receive for their products at the source. The organization is urging the activation of the safeguard clause within the anti-crisis shield to protect the agricultural sector.
