Upadacitinib approved for vitiligo and alopecia areata

The oral medication upadacitinib has received approval for the treatment of both vitiligo and alopecia areata. The drug functions as a small molecule that targets specific points in the immune system to block the transmission of inflammatory signals within cells.

In cases of alopecia areata, the treatment aims to relieve pressure on the hair follicle to promote hair regrowth. For vitiligo, it works by preventing the attack on melanocytes, the cells responsible for skin pigment, thereby allowing for the repopulation of pigmented cells.

Antonio Costanzo, Vice President of Sidemast and Director of Dermatology at Humanitas University, noted that while the drug is already approved for other indications, these two new uses address high patient demand. The availability of the treatment in Italy will depend on approval from the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA), a process that typically takes less than a year.
