Upadacitinib shows effectiveness in treating severe alopecia areata

Upadacitinib, a medication originally developed to treat rheumatoid arthritis, has demonstrated significant effectiveness in restoring hair to patients suffering from severe alopecia areata. Clinical trials conducted across China, Europe, and North America revealed that one in five participants regained full scalp hair within 24 weeks.

Research led by Harvard University involved participants who had lost an average of 84 percent of their hair. The drug works by blocking the JAK/STAT signaling pathway, which reduces the autoimmune response responsible for attacking hair follicles. Results published in JAMA Dermatology indicate that approximately half of the patients receiving the treatment achieved at least 80 percent hair regrowth within six months. Specifically, in the 30 mg dosage group, 46 percent of patients saw hair regrowth exceeding 90 percent.
