Upadacitinib shows significant hair regrowth in severe alopecia areata trials
Clinical trials for upadacitinib, a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor, have demonstrated significant efficacy in treating severe alopecia areata. Data from two Phase 3 trials, UP-AA1 and UP-AA2, showed that the medication can induce substantial scalp hair regrowth in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older.
In the UP-AA1 trial, 45.2% of patients receiving a 15 mg dose and 55.0% of those receiving 30 mg met the primary endpoint of achieving 80% or greater scalp hair regrowth by week 24. Results in the UP-AA2 trial were consistent, with response rates of 44.6% and 54.3% for the respective doses compared to minimal regrowth in the placebo group.
Upadacitinib works by suppressing the inflammatory pathways and interferon-gamma signaling that cause the immune system to attack hair follicles. AbbVie has submitted a supplemental new drug application to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to seek approval for this use. Unlike traditional corticosteroid treatments that may require scalp injections, upadacitinib is administered orally.
