Županja citizens form initiative over Stara ciglana landfill permit

Citizens in Županja have formed an informal civic initiative to participate in the public consultation regarding the amendment and supplement of environmental permit conditions for the Stara ciglana municipal waste landfill. The public discussion period is scheduled to last until September 25, 2026.

The initiative has submitted a joint petition containing nine specific requests aimed at environmental protection and safeguarding the health and quality of life for residents in Županja and surrounding areas. Key demands include the regular monitoring and public disclosure of groundwater quality, the establishment of a functional piezometer system, and detailed explanations regarding the capacity of leachate management systems to prevent uncontrolled discharge into soil, channels, or surface and groundwater.

Furthermore, the group is seeking assessments on the landfill's potential impact on drainage channels, groundwater, and the Sava River. The organizers emphasized that the initiative is non-political and serves as a platform for residents to collectively voice concerns to relevant authorities.
