UPCT and UMH researchers develop technique to triple industrial heat transfer

Researchers from the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT) and the Universidad Miguel Hernández (UMH) have developed an innovative technique to multiply heat transfer in industrial processes. By combining textured heat transfer surfaces with flow agitation in exchanger tubes using a new oscillatory device, the method can triple or even quadruple heat transfer efficiency.

This advancement could allow thermal equipment to reduce in size by 40% to 70%. The system is designed to improve global process sustainability, reduce fouling in corrugated tubes, and increase the homogeneity of viscous flows. It is particularly compatible with the safety and hygiene requirements of the food and biotechnology industries.

The project, led by Professor Juan Pedro Solano and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, is currently being tested via experimental prototypes in three pilot plants. One aspect of the research received the ‘Best work in heat and mass transfer improvement’ award at the XIX UK Heat Transfer Conference in Newcastle.
