Upendra Kushwaha urges Election Commission to clarify SIR controversy

Political tension is rising in India regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and the role of the Election Commission. Upendra Kushwaha, leader of the Rashtriya Lok Morcha and a Rajya Sabha MP, has called on the Election Commission to issue an immediate clarification to resolve public confusion caused by the ongoing controversy.

Kushwaha’s demand follows similar calls from NDA ally Chirag Paswan. The controversy involves allegations from opposition parties, including the Congress, regarding irregularities in voter lists and the potential removal of names. The Congress party has organized protests across various regions, including Delhi, Punjab, Chandigarh, and Odisha, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has also been filed in the Supreme Court seeking an independent investigation into alleged irregularities in the Commission's functioning. In response to recent tensions, the Election Commission issued a press note stating that internal disagreements within the multi-member body are part of established procedures and that decisions are made by majority vote, dismissing claims of institutional conflict.
