UPI and global instant payments expand through interoperability and UX design
The global landscape of real-time payments is shifting toward greater interoperability and sophisticated user experience design. As of June 2026, 137 countries have implemented state-owned or mandated 24/7 instant-payment systems. India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has demonstrated massive scale, processing 23.2 billion transactions in May 2026 alone.
To facilitate international use, NPCI International Payments (NIPL) is expanding UPI connectivity across various markets. As of September 2026, UPI is operational in 13 country-market arrangements, including Singapore, the UAE, France, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Qatar, Greece, Cambodia, and Uzbekistan. These connections support both person-to-merchant (P2M) and person-to-person (P2P) transactions.
As payment speeds increase, the focus for developers is shifting from reducing friction to managing user control. While biometric authentication and invisible payments reduce reliance on passwords, they can lead to unintentional purchases. Designers are increasingly implementing intentional “speed bumps,” such as gesture-based confirmations or hold-to-pay buttons, to ensure users remain aware of their financial actions during high-speed transactions.
