UPM inaugurates world's largest wood-based biorefinery in Germany

UPM has inaugurated a major biorefinery in Leuna, Germany, establishing a new industrial platform for renewable chemicals derived from wood. The facility converts lignocellulosic biomass, primarily wood from sustainably managed forests and sawmill residues, into biochemicals.

With an annual capacity of 220,000 tons, the plant is the largest of its kind globally. Operations such as enzymatic hydrolysis and the production of specialty chemicals from lignin are currently stable as the company scales up sales. The resulting biochemicals are intended for use in various everyday products, including clothing, packaging, cosmetics, construction materials, and tires.

UPM CEO Massimo Reynaudo described the investment as a milestone for the company’s growth and a demonstration of its commitment to innovation. The project is also considered a significant step for the European bioeconomy, proving that renewable carbon-based solutions can transition from pilot projects to commercial-scale production.
