Sweden to scrap mandatory driver‑training course for private learners
The Swedish government has decided to eliminate the obligatory introductory driver‑training course that was introduced in 2004. Studies showed the course did not achieve the intended safety benefits and imposed unnecessary time and cost burdens on both learners and instructors. Under the new rules, private learners will be able to register multiple instructors, which is expected to increase practice opportunities and better prepare candidates for the driving test.
The remaining requirements still apply: an instructor must be at least 24 years old and have held a valid driving licence for at least five of the past ten years, while a learner must be at least 16 years old and possess a valid driving licence permit.
