Upper Austria allocates funds for Kasberg ski resort amid takeover uncertainty
The state of Upper Austria has released €850,000 to support the Kasberg ski resort in Grünau im Almtal. This funding is intended to cover current operating costs and prepare for the 2026/2027 winter season, specifically targeting energy supplies and the maintenance of lift and cable car installations.
This allocation is part of a larger financing framework that could see up to €17 million invested in the area for operations, necessary replacements, and snowmaking concepts. However, the state's planned takeover of the resort faces significant hurdles. The acquisition may fail if all landowners do not sign new lease contracts by the October 31 deadline; currently, one landowner has yet to sign.
Critics in the Upper Austrian Landtag have raised concerns regarding the long-term economic viability of the project. While the purchase price is relatively low, total projected costs—including personnel, decommissioning, and reclamation—could exceed €20 million in the short term. Some estimates suggest total costs could reach between €33 million and €70 million over the next several decades, leading to questions about the lack of a sustainable business model that does not rely on taxpayer subsidies.
