Upper Austria has announced a comprehensive reform of its municipal law aimed at modernizing local administration by the end of 2026. Regional Councilor Michaela Langer-Weninger stated the initiative focuses on making administration faster, more transparent, and more efficient.
Key pillars of the reform include shortening decision-making processes and reducing bureaucracy. By increasing value thresholds and lowering formal hurdles, municipalities will be able to execute smaller projects and essential infrastructure repairs more quickly.
The reform also emphasizes digital transparency. Municipal council meetings are intended to be recorded and made available online, with more comprehensive documentation of inquiries, responses, and voting results to increase public accessibility. Additionally, the plan seeks to strengthen municipal autonomy and facilitate cooperation through easier formation of administrative communities.
