Upper Austria automotive repair costs show significant price variations
An investigation by the Chamber of Labour Upper Austria (Arbeiterkammer Oberösterreich) has revealed significant price variations in automotive services across 123 workshops in the region. Hourly rates for mechanics, panel beaters, and painters show substantial differences, with some specialized services reaching up to 297 euros per hour.
On average, mechanic work costs 139 euros per hour, while panel beating and painting services average 205 and 211 euros, respectively. Compared to the previous year, hourly rates have increased by approximately 4 percent. The range for mechanic rates spans from 50 euros to 225.90 euros, while panel beating and painting rates vary between 75 and 297 euros.
Vehicle inspection (Pickerl) costs also fluctuate, averaging 73 euros. Regional differences are notable, with inspections in Freistadt averaging 65 euros compared to 82 euros in Wels. Prices for inspections range from a minimum of 48 euros to a maximum of 101.52 euros. For comparison, the ARBÖ charges 72.20 euros including the sticker, while the ÖAMTC charges 60.30 euros.
The Chamber recommends that consumers request a written cost estimate before authorizing repairs to avoid unexpected expenses and suggests setting a price ceiling for works.
