Central Europe hit by severe storms, hail, and Saharan dust

Central Europe is experiencing severe weather disruptions, including massive thunderstorms, hail, and Saharan dust. In Switzerland, a powerful cold front caused widespread damage, particularly in the Aargau, Solothurn, and Zurich regions. Insurance companies report millions in damages from tennis-ball-sized hail, which destroyed vehicles, roofs, and gardens. The storm also caused power outages, disrupted rail services, and forced flight cancellations at Zurich Airport.

In Austria, the weather is characterized by high temperatures reaching up to 36 degrees Celsius, accompanied by Saharan dust that has turned the sky a hazy yellow. While the heat has impacted the agricultural sector, leading to early livestock slaughtering due to fodder shortages, blood donation rates in Upper Austria have remained stable despite the heatwave.

In Germany, Saharan dust is affecting parts of Bavaria and the Allgäu region, potentially causing ‘blood rain’—reddish precipitation mixed with sand. While not toxic, the dust can affect individuals with respiratory sensitivities and may damage vehicle paintwork if not cleaned promptly.
