Upper East Side Legionnaires' outbreak death toll reaches nine

The death toll from the Legionnaires' disease outbreak in Manhattan's Upper East Side has risen to nine following the deaths of two patients who had been diagnosed weeks earlier. Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin confirmed the deaths, noting that the cluster, centered in Carnegie Hill and Yorkville, has now surpassed the 2025 Harlem outbreak in fatalities.

The New York City Department of Health officially declared the outbreak over on July 31, stating that no new cases have been diagnosed since July 21. While the source has been eliminated, one person remains hospitalized. The investigation involved testing 183 cooling towers across 160 buildings, with 59 towers confirmed to contain live bacteria. Officials reported that all identified towers have since been cleaned and disinfected, despite findings of widespread compliance issues during the investigation.

In total, the outbreak resulted in 92 diagnosed cases across ZIP codes 10028, 10075, and 10128.
