Upper Hunter air quality alerts reach 200th milestone this year

Residents in the Upper Hunter region are calling for health checks following the 200th air quality alert issued this year by the Upper Hunter Air Quality Network. The alerts indicate elevated PM10 or dust levels across the network's 14 monitors.

Local residents, including mining veteran Kevin Waldock, argue that current government regulations are failing to curb air pollution from open-cut coal mines. Waldock suggests that the height of overburden dumps is a primary driver of dust dispersion, noting that reducing these dumps from heights of 190m to 20-30m—similar to regulations in the United States—could significantly mitigate the impact on local communities.
