Upper Hunter Council seeks to save Scott Memorial Hospital maternity services
The Upper Hunter Shire Council is calling for urgent intervention from NSW Health Minister Ryan Park to prevent the loss of maternity services at Scott Memorial Hospital in Scone. The council's move follows the announcement that the retirement of the hospital's last obstetrician would leave the facility without obstetric capabilities.
If services are lost, residents in the Upper Hunter catchment area will be forced to travel approximately two and a half hours to Maitland Hospital for all antenatal, birthing, and postnatal care. The potential loss of these services has prompted the Scone branch of the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association and the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation to launch an e-petition to preserve local care.
