Upper Hunter Mayor calls for legislated end-date for coal mining

Muswellbrook Mayor Jeff Drayton has called for a legislated end-date for coal mining in the Upper Hunter region to facilitate a ‘just transition’. The call follows a study tour to Germany, where coal mining is scheduled to end by 2035.

Drayton highlighted significant disparities between the German and Australian approaches, noting that Germany has allocated a $66 billion budget for its transition, whereas New South Wales provides $25 million annually across its coal-producing regions.

The request for a transition timeframe comes amid ongoing mining activity and approvals. Since 2023, 14 mining projects have been approved in New South Wales. Locally, the Rix's Creek North Continuation Project is seeking approval to operate until 2049, highlighting the tension between long-term transition planning and continued resource extraction.
