Upper Lusatia begins 25th annual Fish Weeks festival

The 25th Lausitzer Fischwochen (Lusatian Fish Weeks) have officially commenced in the Upper Lusatia region of Germany. The event, which runs until November 1, 2026, celebrates the local pond management tradition that has shaped the regional landscape for approximately eight centuries.

Starting with the traditional fish harvesting at Erlichthof Rietschen, the festivities include public demonstrations of fish harvesting, guided hikes, and various regional culinary offerings. Local restaurants will feature specialties such as carp, trout, pike-perch, and tench.

Dr. Stephan Meyer, the District Administrator of Görlitz, emphasized the importance of supporting local fisheries to maintain the economic viability of these businesses, which provide both food and vital habitats for various plant and animal species. The event aims to connect local pond owners, the gastronomy sector, and tourism providers while highlighting the high quality of locally produced fish.
