Upper Silesia debates monuments to Prussian elites

A debate regarding historical memory and the commemoration of Prussian elites has emerged in Upper Silesia, Poland. Publicist Wacław Jan Kroczek has criticized the honoring of German politicians and industrialists in cities such as Bytom, Rybnik, and Świętochłowice, describing these actions as ‘German marking of the territory.’

A central point of contention is a bench dedicated to industrialist Guid Henckel von Donnersmarck, which was unveiled in Świętochłowice on August 10, 2026. The project, initiated by regionalist Monika Kassner and funded through a local participatory budget, cost approximately 139,000 PLN. The unveiling coincided with the 196th anniversary of the industrialist's birth.

The controversy touches on the complex identity of the region, which has historically experienced Germanization, border shifts, and various political transformations. Critics argue that such monuments should be viewed through a Polish historical perspective rather than as neutral urban decorations.
