Upper St. John Valley Recovery High School opens in Maine

The Upper St. John Valley Recovery High School has officially opened in Fort Kent, Maine, marking the first institution of its kind in the state and the first rural recovery high school in New England. Located at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, the school provides a drug-, alcohol-, and nicotine-free environment specifically designed for students already in recovery from addiction.

The program aims to support students in pursuing high school diplomas while mitigating the risk of relapse. Local educators noted that many adolescents in recovery face immediate exposure to substances upon returning to traditional school settings. By providing a controlled environment, organizers hope to help students overcome the stigma associated with substance misuse and mental health conditions.

The school's launch follows a $616,000 award from the Maine Recovery Council to the Fort Kent-based school district. This initiative comes as Maine reports a complex overdose landscape; while fatal overdoses decreased by 9.5% between January and June compared to the previous year, nonfatal overdoses rose by 1.2% during the same period.
