Uppsala University researchers review anesthesia risks in children

Researchers from Uppsala University and Akademiska sjukhuset have published a review in The Lancet regarding the potential long-term effects of general anesthesia on brain development in children. While animal studies suggest anesthetic drugs may influence brain development, a definitive causal link in humans remains unproven.

Large-scale population studies have noted an increased prevalence of conditions such as ADHD, autism, and depression in children who have undergone surgery. However, researchers emphasize that it is currently impossible to isolate the effects of anesthesia from the surgery itself, underlying illnesses, inflammation, or the hospital stay.

Randomized studies on infants indicate that single, short-term exposure is not linked to measurable declines in general cognitive functions. Scientific evidence regarding older children and adolescents remains limited. The research group, which included input from parents, advises that necessary medical procedures should not be delayed due to theoretical risks. The findings aim to provide medical professionals with better support for communicating balanced information to parents.
