UPS tests cargo bike deliveries in Florence
UPS has launched a six-month pilot program in Florence to test cargo bike deliveries within the city's historic center. This initiative is part of the European ‘Unchain’ project, funded by the Horizon Europe program, which aims to develop more efficient urban logistics models.
Operating from a micro-hub located in Piazza Annigoni, the project utilizes two cargo bikes to navigate narrow streets, reducing the need for large, polluting trucks. The trial includes a digital platform to manage loading and unloading spaces, check-in/check-out procedures, and activity monitoring via sensors and cameras. The goal is to decrease traffic congestion and lower environmental emissions in the city center.
