UPTA demands RETA transition pathway for 100,000 professionals

The Union of Professionals and Self-Employed Workers (UPTA) has denounced the Spanish government's lack of progress regarding the regulatory development of a transition pathway to the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (RETA).

Approximately 100,000 professionals currently linked to alternative mutual insurance systems—including lawyers, solicitors, and architects—are seeking a way to transfer their accumulated economic rights to the Social Security system to ensure a dignified retirement. UPTA criticized the "passivity" of political parties and called for transparency regarding the role of professional associations and mutual insurance entities.

The organization raised concerns about potential economic interests or pressures that might be hindering the process. UPTA also highlighted a contradiction in the current pension debate, noting that while thousands seek integration into the public system, some political groups are proposing to increase the weight of private capitalization systems. UPTA argued that private models often fail to meet the economic needs of workers after a lifetime of contributions.
