United States Accelerates Domestic Uranium Production for Nuclear Expansion
The United States is pursuing a major expansion of its nuclear power capacity, targeting an increase from roughly 100 GW to 400 GW by 2050. To support this goal, the country must close a large domestic uranium supply gap; in 2024 U.S. mines produced only about 677,000 lb of uranium concentrate, while the vast majority of reactor fuel is imported.
American Uranium CEO Bruce Lane said the company’s Lo Herma project in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin is being positioned as a cornerstone of that effort, noting, “We want to make sure Lo Herma’s relevance is clearly anchored to the much bigger nuclear story unfolding in the US.” Drilling at Lo Herma has finished, with a resource update expected by the end of July and a scoping study slated for October.
Washington and Riyadh signed a civilian nuclear cooperation agreement on 22 July 2026 under Section 123 of the U.S. Atomic Energy Act, creating a framework for U.S. firms to access the emerging Saudi nuclear market and further stimulating domestic uranium projects.
Anfield Energy announced a US$6 million underwritten share offering to fund its U.S. uranium assets, including the Shootaring Canyon mill in Utah, which is licensed to produce about 1.3 million lb of uranium annually, with commercial operations projected for 2027. The financing also supports development of the Paradox Complex, Velvet‑Wood, Slick Rock, and other projects across the western United States.
