Urban art festivals drive community revitalization in Spain and Portugal

Urban art festivals in Spain and Portugal are utilizing muralism to revitalize local communities and public spaces.

In Ferrol, Spain, the Meninas de Canido festival has reached its 18th edition. Originally started by artist Eduardo Hermida, the project was inspired by Velázquez’s ‘Las Meninas’ and aimed to revitalize the Canido neighborhood by transforming abandoned buildings and deteriorating facades into canvases for artistic intervention.

In Cascais, Portugal, the eighth edition of the ‘Infinito’ Urban Art Festival took place in the Torre neighborhood from September 7 to 14. Organized by the ‘Somos Torre’ youth association with support from the Cascais City Council, the event featured eight artists working in pairs to create four new murals. The festival aims to promote community participation and public space regeneration, adding new works to the local street art route.
