Urban centers adopt climate-smart architecture to combat rising heat

Rising temperatures and the ‘urban heat island’ effect are driving urgent calls for climate-smart architecture and urban adaptation. Densely populated areas are warming faster than rural surroundings, posing significant risks to public health and increasing energy demands.

In Europe, which is warming at more than twice the global average, recent years have seen tens of thousands of heat-related deaths. Cities such as Paris, Milan, and Barcelona are facing challenges as traditional habitats and cultural traditions are threatened by increasingly lethal heat waves and wildfires.

To combat these trends, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) recommends minimizing cooling loads through low-energy methods and phasing down high-emission refrigerants. Experts suggest architectural solutions such as external shading, reflective surfaces, improved insulation, and natural ventilation to enhance thermal comfort and urban resilience.
