Urban cycling evolves through smart technology and new mobility regulations

The urban cycling landscape is undergoing a technological and regulatory transformation. In Dublin, the City of Dublin launched a micromobility pilot program to address safety and usage concerns regarding e-bikes and e-scooters on shared paths. Transportation Director Jeannie Willis noted that the initiative was driven by resident feedback concerning speed and courtesy in spaces shared by pedestrians and cyclists.

Simultaneously, the cycling industry is seeing increased integration of smart technology. Companies like the Madrid-based UNIT 1 are developing connected safety ecosystems, including smart helmets with integrated lighting and turn signals. These products, such as the AURA and NEON models, are designed to meet specific safety standards like NTA 8776 for e-bike riders, aiming to improve communication between cyclists and motorists.
