Urban development and community protests in Argentina and Uruguay
In Argentina, residents of Plaza Buenos Aires are protesting potential changes to the green space. Neighbors, represented by Gabriela Cárcamo, are demanding the preservation of the area, which they describe as a vital “lung” for the neighborhood. Concerns have been raised regarding a possible municipal intervention that could involve roofing a sports field for a local club, potentially altering the park's traditional use and environmental value.
In Uruguay, a community assembly was held in Piedras Blancas to discuss a large-scale regularization and urban redevelopment project. The initiative involves the Ministry of Housing and Territorial Planning, the National Housing Agency, and the Municipality of Montevideo. The project aims to provide integral improvements for approximately 620 families across several sectors, including Potencia and Los Milagros. Planned interventions include upgrades to sanitation, drainage, public lighting, drinking water, electricity, and street infrastructure to address flooding and housing stability.
