Urban development disputes spark tree preservation conflicts in Zeuthen and Halle

Local disputes regarding urban development and tree preservation are causing tension in Zeuthen and Halle.

In Zeuthen, a debate continues over the renovation of Seestraße, which involves the planned removal of 261 trees. While the NABU and local initiatives advocate for preservation, a recent lecture by former urban planner Dr. Ditmar Hunger challenged existing road planning. Hunger suggested that the historical character of the avenue is at risk, though critics note his estimates regarding the original number of trees are based on mathematical reconstructions rather than direct documentation.

In Halle, a conflict has emerged between tenants and the Wohnungsgenossenschaft Halle-Süd over community gardens. The cooperative intends to create parking spaces through renovation, while residents fight to protect the green space and established trees. The city's building department has declined to intervene, stating that mediating between the parties is not the administration's responsibility and has recommended that the groups seek a neutral mediator.
