West African regional updates on land security and sanitation
Various regional initiatives regarding urban management, sanitation, and land security are underway across West Africa.
In Côte d'Ivoire, Dr. Okou Roméo clarified that recent development operations in Koumassi Campement targeted only precarious habitats and high-risk zones rather than the entire neighborhood. Meanwhile, in the Tchologo region, the Rural Land Agency (AFOR) reported that over 500,000 hectares have been secured through the PRESFOR program, surpassing initial targets.
Sanitation efforts are also prominent. In Forécariah, Guinea, local authorities provided cleaning equipment to women workers to improve public hygiene. In Am-Timan, Chad, the municipality mobilized youth and associations for a large-scale cleaning operation at the central market. Similarly, in Boussé, Burkina Faso, community groups organized a sanitation drive at a local medical center to improve patient environments and prevent diseases like malaria.
In Tchologo, the land security project is supported by funding from the World Bank and the French Development Agency (AFD), aiming to formalize agrarian contracts and village boundaries.
