Urban development initiatives proposed in Braunschweig and Hamburg

Braunschweig is planning to increase urban greenery through the ‘50 Trees for the City Center’ project. The initiative aims to make the city center cooler and more resilient. The city administration has identified nearly 60 locations within existing green spaces for planting, with work potentially starting as early as this autumn or early winter. Additional locations on paved public surfaces are being evaluated, which would require sealing removal. The project has an estimated budget of approximately 420,000 euros, with the possibility of receiving up to 40 percent in funding through the ‘Resilient Cities’ program.

In Hamburg, a study by BBE Handelsberatung has analyzed the potential for a new large-scale market hall, similar to models found in other European cities. While Hamburg has a strong market tradition with sites like the Fish Market and the Großmarkt, it lacks a major central market hall. The analysis examined six potential locations, including Karstadt Osterstraße, Kampnagel Jarrestraße, and Bahnhof Altona, to determine the requirements for such a concept to succeed.
