Urban gardening techniques for small living spaces
Urban gardening is achievable in small living spaces such as apartments without gardens or balconies through various methods including containers, vertical gardening, collective gardens, and hydroponics.
When using containers like pots or planters, selecting appropriate plants is essential. Herbs, radishes, salads, tomatoes, and dwarf beans are suitable for limited spaces. A key consideration is the volume of the substrate; smaller containers dry out faster and require more frequent watering and fertilization. For better results, a container depth and width of approximately 45 cm is recommended, along with a drainage layer at the bottom.
Another option is creating mini table gardens. Closed glass jars can create a stable, self-sustaining ecosystem with constant humidity, making them ideal for those who may forget to water plants. Open ceramic or glass containers allow for air circulation but require more regular maintenance. Success depends on grouping plants with similar light and water requirements, such as keeping tropical species in humid environments and drought-resistant plants in open containers.
