Urban greening initiatives launched in Nuremberg and Villach

Local initiatives in Germany and Austria are focusing on urban reforestation and tree care to combat rising temperatures and water scarcity.

In Nuremberg, Germany, Mathias Schmidt, an 80-year-old former water management expert, serves as one of 200 ‘watering patrons’ helping to maintain city greenery. To combat drought in the Middle Franconia region, Schmidt utilizes specialized equipment to connect hoses to hydrants to ensure trees receive sufficient hydration. He also co-founded the ‘Bäume für Nürnberg Stiftung’ (Trees for Nuremberg Foundation) with a personal contribution of 50,000 euros.

In Villach, Austria, Mayor Günther Albel has launched an initiative to plant 500 additional trees as part of a climate change adaptation strategy. To foster community involvement, local children and educators from kindergartens and primary schools are deciding the specific locations for the new plantings. The project aims to provide natural shade and improve the quality of life in educational and recreational areas.
