Urban history and infrastructure challenges in Naples

Naples features diverse urban landmarks that reflect the city's evolving history and planning challenges. Piazza Dante, formerly known as Foro Carolino, was designed by Luigi Vanvitelli in the 18th century to honor the Bourbon dynasty. Built with Enlightenment ideals of order and rationality, the semicircular space was intended to represent sovereign virtues and provide a monumental urban vision. Today, the square is dominated by a statue of Dante Alighieri.

In contrast to the historical success of Piazza Dante, the Arenella district contains a significant urban planning failure. A concrete and iron viaduct on via San Giacomo dei Capri has remained unfinished for over forty years. Originally intended to connect with via Jannelli to alleviate local traffic, the structure was partially built between 1982 and 1985 during the post-earthquake reconstruction period. The bridge remains a disconnected piece of infrastructure, serving as a symbol of unfulfilled urban promises.
