Urban housing developments advance in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh

Major apartment developments have received significant milestones in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

In Philadelphia, a 14-story mixed-income tower at 2012 Chestnut St. is set to begin construction following an 11-year delay. A collaboration between the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA) and Alterra Property Group, the $65 million project will feature 121 units, including affordable housing for those at 80% of the area median income. The project faced delays due to HUD regulatory processes, environmental reviews, and rising construction costs.

In Pittsburgh, the city’s planning commission approved The Wharton, a 365-unit apartment building on the South Side. Developed by Greystar, the 370,000-square-foot project will occupy a former industrial site. The plan was adjusted following community feedback to reduce the unit count and modify parking arrangements. The new building is expected to revitalize the area by replacing vacant industrial properties with residential space and amenities.
