Urban infrastructure updates in Brussels and the Netherlands
In Brussels, work has begun in Maximiliaanpark to uncover parts of the Zenne river. Much of the river remains hidden beneath the city following its enclosure between 1867 and 1871, a decision made by Mayor Jules Anspach after a cholera epidemic. While the river's path is now largely covered by boulevards and tram lines, water purification efforts have allowed fish and aquatic plants to return to the underground waterway.
In the Netherlands, Rijkswaterstaat has commenced a renovation of the Krammersluizen in Philipsdam, located at the border of Zeeland, Noord-Brabant, and Zuid-Holland. The project, scheduled to run until May 2027, involves repairing the nearly forty-year-old lock complex. The maintenance includes the removal and reinforcement of 65,000-kilogram lock doors. The works will impact both commercial and recreational shipping, with certain passages closed for inspections and high-voltage system testing.
