Urban legends trigger violence in Romania and health risks in Hungary

Social media-driven urban legends are causing real-world unrest and health risks in Hungary and Romania. In Transylvania, a long-standing myth regarding a “black ambulance” allegedly kidnapping children has escalated into physical violence. Local residents, fueled by rumors, recently attacked an actual emergency medical team near Récekeresztúr and Kecskeháza. The mob used sticks and tools to assault the vehicle, resulting in a driver suffering a serious eye injury from shattered glass. Romanian police have since arrested several suspects, including three men held in custody and seven others under investigation for assault and disturbing the peace.

Simultaneously, a different internet phenomenon involving the “Hat Man” is surfacing. This legend, often associated with sleep paralysis hallucinations, has led some youths to attempt dangerous social media challenges to induce similar states. In the United States, the “Benadryl Challenge”—where individuals ingest large amounts of allergy medication to trigger hallucinations—has resulted in fatalities and over one hundred emergency room visits in Texas. Experts note that while the “Hat Man” is a documented neurological phenomenon during REM sleep, the intentional pursuit of these states via drug misuse poses severe health risks.
