Urban management and housing protests reported in Puebla and Santander
In Puebla, Mexico, authorities have conducted significant reordering operations targeting street vendors. General Secretary of Government Franco Rodríguez Álvarez reported that approximately 2,500 vendors have been removed from public spaces out of an estimated 20,000 active merchants in the capital. These operations, which saw a 39.8 percent increase compared to the previous period, included over 7,000 actions across 50 zones, including the Historic Center and areas near hospitals and schools.
To manage the situation, the city has stopped issuing new street vending permits and has seen an 18.5 percent decrease in renewals. While the government has encouraged vendors to move to municipal markets, over 2,000 spaces remain vacant due to low customer foot traffic. Officials stated that operations will continue with an emphasis on dialogue to balance informal commerce with formal businesses and tourism.
In Santander, Spain, a housing protest camp has formed in Plaza Porticada. Approximately 40 tents have been erected by individuals facing various housing challenges, including evictions and high rental costs. The encampment, which began in late September, serves as a mobilization effort ahead of a general strike called by the Sindicato de Inquilinas scheduled for November 11.
