Urban Meyer criticizes college football expansion and donor influence

Former college football coach Urban Meyer has expressed concerns regarding the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics, specifically addressing the proposed 24-team College Football Playoff expansion and the influence of wealthy donors.

Regarding the playoff format, Meyer stated that while he now supports the expansion due to the high level of parity in the sport, he believes the move threatens the tradition of conference championship games. He argued that these games are among the most exciting elements of the sport and fears their importance will be diminished.

Meyer also raised alarms about the conduct of wealthy benefactors, alleging that some intoxicated donors attempt to exert control over roster decisions and playing time in exchange for financial contributions. While supporting Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) compensation, Meyer characterized multi-million-dollar recruitment packages as problematic and warned that private equity and donor entitlement are disrupting traditional athletic department structures.
